Most Americans probably do not recognize the name Ian McKellen, but most would recognize his face. That’s because he’s spent the last decade of his life making two fictional characters very famous: Gandalf the Grey (from The Lord of the Rings) and Magneto (from the X-Men films).

Tancredo de Almeida Neves was a Brazilian politician, and a very good one at that. He was elected to the state legislature in 1947, and in 1953, was appointed Minister of Justice by President Vargas.

After President Vargas committed suicide in 1954, the country entered into a bit of political crisis. Neves was then appointed Prime Minister by Vargas’ replacement, President Goulart. Unfortunately, more political unrest plagued the South American nation, and in 1964, President Goulart was overthrown. Continue reading
