You’re How Old???

A bald, wrinkly, little man was rocking in a chair on his front porch, smiling happily, when a passerby, charmed by his smile, walked up to him.

The passerby said to the content gentleman, “Sir, I couldn’t help noticing how happy you look. What’s your secret for a long and happy life?”

“I smoke three packs of cigarettes every single day,” he said with a toothless grin. “I drink a case of whiskey a week, eat fast food, and never exercise.”

“No way! How old are you?” asked the incredulous passerby.

“Twenty-six!”

This funny little story clearly illustrates the importance of wisdom in our lives. When we don’t seek after wisdom, we do stupid things…and pay a price. We can’t smoke, drink, and indulge in whatever we want and expect to live very long.

Proverbs 4:20-27 teaches us the importance of wisdom:

My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to a man’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you.
Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.

Only through this kind of wisdom will we avoid looking ridiculous in a rocking chair at the age of 26.
