What’s up with the claims of household cleaners? One promises to remove 99.99% bacteria. Another one pledges to kill 99.99% of germs. When it comes to most things in life, most people believe that 99.99% is good enough.
But there’s one area of life that isn’t so forgiving. In this case, 99.99% isn’t anywhere near good enough.
Though it’s a tiny word, “sin” carries significant meaning. The Bible teaches that sin is anything that we do in opposition to God’s commands and/or desires. To sin is the equivalent of us saying to God, “We know better than you, God.” It’s our willful, intentional disobedience toward him. As a result, our sin separates us from God.
What’s worse, our sin carries a stiff penalty with it: death. (Yep, sin is a lot scarier than household germs and bacteria!) Some might consider the consequence too harsh, but when compared to a perfect God, it becomes easy to understand why He cannot tolerate any sin in us.
Thus, every person needs to be forgiven of their sin…and 100% of it! It doesn’t do anyone any good to have just 99.99% of their sin forgiven; we need 100% of our sin forgiven! 0.01% of sin is still too much sin for God’s standards. We must be totally cleansed of our sin.
All of it.
Fortunately, that’s exactly what Jesus’ blood does for us; it cleanses us from ALL sin, every bit of it. The Apostle John made it crystal clear in 1 John 1:7 when he wrote:
If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. (1 John 1:7)
You can settle for a household cleaner that only gets rid of 99.99% of life’s dirt, grime, bacteria, and germs. But when it comes to choosing a Savior, go with the One who purifies you from 100% of your sin!
