Prisons in California were recently ordered to release a sizeable number of convicted criminals in order to reduce overpopulation at the state’s correctional facilities. In the process, over 10,000 law breakers were paroled. The early release was only intended to affect inmates deemed a “low risk” to society.
But something went terribly wrong.
In May of 2011, during the Supreme Court-ordered reduction, an estimated 450 “violent criminals” and 1,000 “high risk” offenders were paroled along with the others due to shortcomings in the computer system.
These law breakers are now out of prison…on unsupervised parole.
I know what you’re thinking: How could this happen? How did such a huge mistake get made? And more importantly, what’s being done to resolve it?
Ummm…you may want to sit down for this part….
The Los Angeles Times has reported that nothing has been done to put any of these “accidentally released” criminals back in prison…or even on supervised parole.
Just one look at the Bible will tell you that man’s justice is very different from God’s justice. With God, there are no mistakes, no computer glitches, and no “time off for good behavior.” God’s justice is always perfect.
In our day and age, there is a lot of talk – some of it by pastors – about judgment, eternity, and Hell. Some teach that God’s judgment is temporary, that His wrath against humanity’s sin can be assuaged after a certain amount of time has passed. Some have even argued that people who are separated from God in Hell will essentially get “time off for good behavior” and then be “paroled” right into Heaven.
Let me be perfectly clear: nowhere is this taught in God’s Word.
When Jesus talked about judgment, He used words like “eternal” (Matthew 25:41). His disciple John received a vision concerning the judgment and described it as lasting “for ever and ever” (Revelation 20:10).
This isn’t bad news; it’s just the truth. But the whole truth is even better: we need not face the judgment or wrath of God because of what His Son Jesus has done for us on the cross!
Some put their hope in Jesus. Some put their hope in a “get paroled from Hell” plan. Which do you trust?
