He owns at least 200 cars, and built a special pyramid in which to store them. He also constructed the world’s biggest pick-up truck…complete with a full suite of luxury rooms. He even has a custom-made, globe-shaped motor home that is exactly one-millionth the size of the Earth.
But evidently, not even that was enough for Hamad Bin Hamdan Al Nahyan.
Hamad Bin Hamdan, also known as the “Rainbow Sheikh” because of his collection of rainbow-painted Mercedes Benzes, is one of the world’s richest people. The 63-year old is a member of the ruling family of the United Arab Emirates and anyone living in the Middle East knows his name.
And now, anybody traveling through space will know his name.
That’s because the sheikh has employed workers from Pakistan and Bangladesh, along with millions of dollars, to carve his name in the sand of Al Futaisi Island in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
But this isn’t anything like what you’ve done at the beach with your family.
Hamad had workers “write” his name using letters that stand a half-mile tall and approximately two miles long. In fact, the letters are so big, they can be seen from satellites in space. The tip of the “H” extends into the coastal waters of the Arabian Gulf, and since all the letters are connected, he has essentially used the ocean to write his name in the desert sands.
It’s an impressive feat, and at the same time, a perfect example of arrogance and waste. That’s because Hamad has used his earthly power to write his name in the wrong place. Jesus encouraged people to make sure their names were written someplace different than the Arabian sand:
I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven. (Luke 10:190-20)
One day, Hamad’s name will disappear from the sand. But the names of believers will be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life for all eternity.
