The old saying, “Blood is thicker than water,” is true in more ways than one. It illustrates just how powerful the bond between family can be. When family members care for one another the way God intended, it can be a sight to behold.
Just asking Jesse Jackson.
In his book, “Rumors of Another World,” Christian author Philip Yancey writes about a visit Rev. Jesse Jackson made to the campus of Southern Mississippi years ago. Jackson and the university’s president were walking around the campus when the preacher and civil rights activist saw a massive young man standing well over six-and-a-half-feet-tall walking next to – and holding the hand of – a young girl who was barely three feet tall. His curiosity got the better of him, so Jackson paused and watched the couple. It wasn’t long before the gargantuan young man, dressed in athletic gear, lifted the tiny female into the air, gave her a kiss, put her gently back down on the ground, and watched her run off to class.
The young man was left alone…and Jackson was left speechless.
Noticing his friend’s bewilderment, the university’s president explained that the young man was a star basketball player for the school and the young girl was his little sister. Tragically, their parents died when they were both young, but the boy committed to taking care of his sister, regardless of any circumstance. During the boy’s senior year of high school, he received one scholarship offer after another from major colleges and universities around the nation…but only the University of Southern Mississippi gave one to his sister, as well.
Jackson, instantly impressed with the young man’s character, went over to the towering athlete and told him just how much he admired his determination to watch over his sister.
The young man simply replied, “Well, those of us the Lord makes 6’ 8” got to watch out for those he makes 3’3.””
