Those who teach communication often use this humorous example to show how meaning can be changed by accenting different words in the exact same sentence. Read the following sentences out loud, accenting the word that is bolded to see for yourself.
I didn’t say you were stupid. (She said you were stupid!)
I didn’t say you were stupid.
I didn’t say you were stupid. (I only thought it!)
I didn’t say you were stupid. (I said he was stupid!)
I didn’t say you were stupid. (I said you are still stupid!)
I didn’t say you were stupid. (I said you were idiotic!)
When you speak, make sure to speak with clarity. Your listeners will hear everything you say…even if it’s not what you intended.
