He’s a highly sought after Christian speaker, and he’s written more than a dozen books about the faith. He pioneered a ministry that has led thousands upon thousands of people to Christ in the last three and a half decades.
And he did all this after he got out of prison.
Charles “Chuck” Colson knows how to get things done. Whether it was raising money, starting law firms, or winning political elections, whatever he touched turned to gold. His determination and hard work eventually earned him the position of Special Counsel to President Richard Nixon in 1969. In this role, Colson advised Nixon on many fronts and was highly involved in all the president did.
That included spying on the Democratic National Committee in Washington DC.
The infamous Watergate scandal rocked President Nixon’s administration, forcing him to resign from office. Colson also felt the hand of justice; he pled guilty to charges of obstruction to justice in allegations related to the Watergate affair.
In the summer of 1974, Colson began what turned out to be a seven month prison sentence at the Maxwell Correctional Facility in Alabama.
In the midst of his personal turmoil, Chuck gave his life to Christ. Many skeptics thought it was just an image-enhancement ploy, but Colson truly had a life-changing experience with Christ.
Upon his release, Colson founded Prison Fellowship. This faith-based organization has yielded many reforms in prisons and rehabilitation centers, but its focus from the outset was sharing the gospel of Christ’s freedom with men and women who were locked up for crimes they committed.
Over the last three decades, men and women behind bars have heard of the life-saving love of Jesus Christ because of the training, outreach, and vision of Prison Fellowship. After witnessing first-hand how a prison sentence so negatively affects the rest of the family, especially the children, Prison Fellowship gave birth to Angel Tree, another outreach focused on families of incarcerated men and women.
So many good things came out of Chuck’s new life given by Jesus. It’s why Colson can truthfully say today, “Thank God for Watergate.”
Chuck clearly sees how God has redeemed his sinful life, and used it to glorify Himself by bringing eternal peace to so many others through His Son Jesus.
