Look, we’ve all dozed off during meetings here and there. It’s just a liability of being human. We’ve probably fallen asleep in class and even in church, too. No biggie, just a bit embarrassing.
But falling asleep during a meeting in North Korea has huge consequences. It can get you killed.
In late summer of 2016, reports trickled out of North Korea that a vice premier named Kim Yong-Jin had been executed for the audacious crime of falling asleep during a meeting presided over by Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Un. Noticing his slumping posture during the meeting, the dictator had Yong-Jin arrested. In the ensuing interrogation it was discovered that the vice premier was guilty of other “crimes” and was then killed by firing squad as an “anti-party, anti-revolutionary agitator.”
The reign of terror inflicted upon the people of North Korea by Kim Jong-Un matches that of his equally lethal father, Kim Jong-Il, who reigned in power from 1994 until his death in December of 2011. Since ascending to power in 2012, Jong-Un has been fierce in stamping out perceived opposition and threats.
Just one year after assuming leadership, the young Kim Jong-Un executed his own uncle on charges of treason and corruption. In April of 2015, reports leaked that Jong-Un had his defense minister Hyon Yong-Chol executed. With an anti-aircraft gun.
Grace and mercy are not realities experienced in the oppressive dictatorship of North Korea. Contrast that existence with the reality of love generously extended to us by a God who would choose to die for the sins we’ve committed so we don’t have to…and you catch a glimpse of Heaven’s compassion.
