Richard hauled himself into his doctor’s office looking incredibly tired. “Doc,” he said, “I’ve got trouble sleeping. I’m hoping you can help me with that.” When the doctor asked about the nature of the problem, Richard replied that dogs in his neighborhood kept roaming the streets, barking at all hours of the night. This went on, night after night, keeping Richard from getting sufficient sleep.
“I’ve got some great news for you,” said his doctor as he dug through a drawer in his desk. “Aha! Here they are. These are some brand new sleeping pills that were just approved. They work great. These will definitely solve your problem, Richard.”
“Perfect,” said Richard as the physician handed him the pills. “I’m willing to try anything. Thanks, doc.”
Two weeks later, Richard came back to the doctor’s office looking even worse than before. “It didn’t work, doc. Your plan didn’t help me at all. I’m more tired than I was before.”
“I don’t understand,” said his doctor in a bit of confusion. “Those pills are the strongest I’m allowed to prescribe.”
“That may be the case,” said Richard, “but even after I chase those dogs down and catch them, it’s still impossible to get them to swallow the pills.”
