The Declaration of Independence is easily the most well-known document in American history, right?
Not so fast….
For years, National Public Radio (NPR) has been in the habit of reading The Declaration of Independence to its listeners every Fourth of July. Seems like a good idea…. Recently, because of the influence of social media, NPR has begun tweeting the Declaration on that day, as well. That’s also a good idea….
But many of NPR’s followers didn’t think the actual content of The Declaration of Independence was a good idea. In fact way too many Americans didn’t even recognize the document. Historic – and inflammatory lines – like these tripped them up:
Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.
When a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
Some even interpreted lines like these below as a call by NPR to revolt against President Donald Trump:
He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.
Here are just a few responses to NPR’s broadcast of the Declaration:
So, NPR is calling for revolution. Interesting way to condone the violence while trying to sound “patriotic.”
Are you [NPR] drunk? Your silly tweets make your state of mind questionable.
This is why you [NPR] are going to get defunded.
No two ways about it, this is bad. After all, The Declaration of Independence is single-handedly the most significant document in our nation’s history. But, this isn’t surprising. Too many are overly opinionated…and under informed.
It makes me wonder how many Christians wouldn’t recognize excerpts from the Bible….
