John D. Rockefeller was one of the richest men in America’s history. He built his vast wealth as the head of Standard Oil Company which he founded in 1870.
Raised in a godly home, the young Rockefeller was often challenged by his mother to be a generous giver. The Baptist minister from his childhood church even encouraged the future tycoon to make as much money as he could, and then give away as much money as he could. Reflecting on that conversation later in life, Rockefeller said, “It was at this moment, that the financial plan of my life was formed.” The oil baron sincerely believed he had a “God-given gift” to make money and it was a calling he took seriously, attaining a net worth of well over a billion dollars in his lifetime.
But eventually, his life came to an end. At his funeral, Rockefeller’s aide was asked how much his boss left behind. The assistant answered wisely, “He left it all behind.”
Each of us will do the same. Make sure your investment is on the right side of eternity.
