Most days, Thomas gets dropped off at school by his mom. Most days, he’s wearing his Superman t-shirt with the iconic “S” emblazoned on his little chest. And most days, he and his young friends run around the playground pretending to be the caped superhero who’s charged with safeguarding Earth from bad guys.
At his elementary school, one day is reserved for “Talk About Your Family Day” each year. Thomas could hardly wait, and when it was finally his turn, he surprised the entire class – including his teacher – by claiming Superman was his uncle. His peers were awed by the declaration, but his teacher didn’t share their exuberance. While praising Thomas for an active imagination, she also sternly warned the little boy that lying was a bad habit.
Confused at her reprimand, but no less adamant in his claim, the blonde-haired boy doubled down by saying, “No, really. Superman is my uncle. I swear he is!” The conversation actually escalated to the point that young Thomas got in trouble, so when his mother came to pick him up at the end of the day, the teacher pulled her aside and told her all about the misadventures of her son.
That night, Thomas’ mom called her brother-in-law and asked him for a simple favor, one he was happy to oblige. A few days later, Thomas was dropped off at school wearing his favorite Superman t-shirt. However, it wasn’t his mom who brought him to school that day.
It was his Uncle Henry. Uncle Henry Cavill, to be precise. “Uncle Henry” is what Thomas calls the talented and chiseled actor who portrays The Man of Steel in the DC Universe movie franchise.
Because of his unique relationship, Thomas rightly gets to call Superman his uncle. In a similar way, every follower of Jesus gets to call God “Father.”
