Yemelyan Yaroslavsky, was a Russian politician, journalist, and revolutionary. However, he is most known for his outspoken atheism. In fact, he was Chairman of Stalin’s “League of the Militant Godless.”
Yeah, that was really the group’s name.
Living and leading during Stalin’s reign of terror – on the Germans and his own nationals – Yaroslavsky took note of those he hated most, the Christians. He once said, “Christianity is like a nail. The harder you strike it the deeper it goes.”
Yaroslavsky should have known his enemy, the church of Jesus Christ, a little better than he did.
Recall Matthew 16 when Simon Peter proclaims Jesus’ lordship; Jesus made a proclamation that has remained true for two millennia. In verses 17 and 18 the Bible says
Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in Heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”
If the very gates of Hell can’t overcome Christ’s church, what chance did Yaroslavsky think he had?
