Without a doubt, the most famous statue of Jesus in the entire world is Christ the Redeemer. Overlooking the sprawling city of Rio de Janeiro in South America, the Redeemer is perched on top of a mountain that’s already 2,300 feet above sea level, with Jesus towering an additional 124 feet into the blue sky.
The stone behemoth serves a constant reminder that Jesus saves.
Well, until recently, that is….
In May of 2021, members of the “United by the Vaccine” movement projected their name, along with the message “VACCINE SAVES” across the outstretched arms of the Savior. The group explained their publicity stunt as a pursuit of vaccine equality for Brazil (and other countries struggling to protect their citizens from the novel coronavirus). Like plenty of other humanitarian crusades that have taken place at the site of this world-famous statue, the ongoing vaccine campaign has been fully supported by the open-air sanctuary that rests at the base of the statue, the Cristo Redentor Sanctuary.
In a pandemic-stricken era, it’s understandable that people will take whatever action they believe to be the most helpful. However, this particular message is incomplete, at best. At worst, it’s blasphemous.
Yes, vaccines can save us from specific diseases…but that’s all they can save us from. Vaccines don’t save us from injustice. Vaccines don’t save from us loneliness. And vaccines certainly don’t save us from sin.
Jesus, on the other hand, saves totally and perfectly.
Ask yourself a simple question: In light of biblical passages like John 3:16, Acts 4:12, Acts 16:31, Romans 5:10, Romans 10:9, and a host of others like them, would Jesus agree with His image being co-opted to state that anyone or anything saves except Him alone?
