Andres Menzies isn’t your typical security guard. He spent 17 years on the detail protecting international pop star Michael Jackson, but it’s the ring he wears on his right hand that he likes to talk about the most. And why not?
It’s an NBA Championship ring he received from billionaire Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks.
At the outset of the 2010-2011 NBA season, the Dallas Mavericks weren’t exactly setting the court on fire. They faced stiff competition from around the league, including the defending champion LA Lakers, the San Antonio Spurs – their in-state rivalry, and of course, the powerhouse that the Heat was building in Miami with Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh.
But when owner Mark Cuban escorted his crew to New Orleans to play the Hornets in November of 2010, the observant security guard approached the billionaire with a hunch about his Mavs who were 6-2 at the time. “You’re going to win the championship, I already know it, I’m positive of it” said Menzies to Cuban…more than six months before the season would end! Then Menzies followed up his prediction with a request: “If you win, do I get a ring?”
Cuban, known as a man-of-the-people, responded, “If we win, you’ll get a ring.”
On June 12th of the following year, the Mavericks, led by the likes of Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, and Shawn Marion, stunned the nation when they defeated the Heat in Game 7. And that’s how an unknown security guard from New Orleans came to own an NBA championship ring – with his name on it! – that’s worth more than his annual salary.
Simply put, Menzies saw something few others did. He had faith that the Mavs could win – and would win! – regardless of their present situation and the fact that they had never won a championship in their franchise’s history. And he was rewarded for his faith.
So are those who put their faith in God.
Look at the likes of Noah, Moses, and Daniel. They – and others – faced situations most would call hopeless, yet they never doubted God’s ability to grant them victory over their circumstances and enemies.
God’s reward seems to be the greatest when the situation is the bleakest. See what no one else sees…and keep faith.
