You know those people who routinely get themselves in trouble because of their mouths? It’s like their jaws start flapping without their brains being engaged. While some think it’s impossible to speak without a brain, there’s at least one Scarecrow who’d disagree.
And he’s an authority on the subject.
In 1939, Frank Baum’s beloved The Wizard of Oz was turned into a major motion picture…and in color, no less! The story followed Dorothy as she made her way through the magical Land of Oz in an effort to get back home to Kansas. With just her dog Toto keeping her company, Dorothy sat off in search of the Emerald City.
Not long into her travels down the Yellow Brick Road, Dorothy came to an intersection and she paused to consider which way she should go. Fortunately for her, a very helpful scarecrow was hanging in a nearby field. He began to eagerly give her directions…which led to even more confusion on Dorothy’s part. She timidly approached the scarecrow with a bewildered look…and lots of questions.
Dorothy: Why…you did say something, didn’t you? (The Scarecrow shakes his head, but then nods.) Are you doing that on purpose, or can’t you make up your mind?
Scarecrow: That’s the trouble. I can’t make up my mind. I haven’t got a brain. Only straw.
Dorothy: How can you talk if you haven’t got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don’t know. But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don’t they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you’re right.
Yeah, sadly, the Scarecrow is right. A whole lot of people do a whole lot of talking…without ever using their brains. It’s a problem that’s plagued us since before the time of King Solomon. In Proverbs 18:2, the wise king said:
A fool finds no pleasure in understanding but delights in airing his own opinions.
Don’t be a fool. Think before you speak.
