When I played football as a kid, my main position was offensive line…because I had the spiritual gift of taking up space. But, every once in a while, Coach let me play tight end! Yes, I was just as slow as I look…but I was hard to take down!
I gotta tell you, it took a tremendous amount of focus to play tight end, but it was a ton of fun doing so! You couldn’t always hear the quarterback shouting the snap count, so you had to watch the ball. When it moved, you moved!
Three steps – slant!
The ball would be right there in front of you. All you had to do was catch it and turn up field. That was the fun part. The not-so-fun part was getting hit. Some of those tackles were brutal. Some of those tackles were from your blind spot. Some of those tackles were hard and fast.
Crunch. Crash. Boom.
Catching the ball was a painful endeavor. Catching the ball meant you became the target. Catching the ball meant you were gonna get hit! So, there were times when you might be tempted to miss the ball on purpose. If the linebacker was big, or if you could hear the cornerback’s footsteps coming up behind you, or if you were in a vulnerable position reaching for the ball…you might just let it fly by. After all, you catch that ball, you’re gonna get hit!
But the truth was…you got hit anyway. That defensive player didn’t care whether you caught the ball or not. He was gonna plaster you regardless…so you might as well go ahead and catch the ball.
The same holds true in our spiritual walk.
You’re gonna get hit by the Devil…so you might as well share your faith anyway.
You’re gonna get hit by the Devil…so you might as well give generously anyway.
You’re gonna get hit by the Devil…so you might as well deny yourself anyway.
You’re gonna get hit by the Devil…so you might as well serve others anyway.
You’re gonna get hit by the Devil…so you might as well take that step of faith anyway.
When it comes to following Jesus, you’re gonna get hit. It’s inevitable. So you might as well go ahead and obey Jesus anyway.
