Charles H. Spurgeon pastored thousands but impacted the lives of millions. The Church is indebted to the Prince of Preachers for his teaching, scholarship, and example. But those who were lost in their sin owed him much more.
That’s because he never gave up on them.
Spurgeon was a staunch Calvinist who believed in God’s ultimate sovereignty in man’s salvation. But while many Calvinists of his day used their theology as an excuse to avoid sharing their faith, Spurgeon evangelized the lost with tremendous effort. He once said:
If sinners will be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our bodies. And if they will perish, let them perish with our arms about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, at least let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go there unwarned and unprayed for.
As a result of his tireless effort, thousands upon thousands experienced the saving grace of Jesus Christ and gained eternal life.
