Many wondered if Brazil would be able to ward off rampant crime (and the Zika virus) in order to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Near the end of the global competition, four American swimmers claimed they were robbed at gunpoint…but they were lying.
Given the consequences they’re facing, one of them might wish he actually was robbed….
After a night of partying, USA’s Olympic superstars Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen stopped off at a gas station in Rio in a drunken stupor. They caused enough of a ruckus that a bathroom door, mirror, and soap dispenser were damaged…and the attention of security guards was raised.
After the Americans failed to buy their way out of trouble, Lochte, a six-time gold medal champion, claimed he and his posse were robbed by men impersonating police officers. The brouhaha captured the world’s attention, but it didn’t take long for the truth to emerge when video surveillance of the “crime scene” was released to the public.
Lochte flew home to The States as soon as possible leaving the other three athletes behind to answer officials’ questions. But Lochte won’t be able to outrun the consequences of his actions….
Several of the swimmer’s endorsement deals were dropped because of his international antics, among them, Speedo USA, Ralph Lauren, Airweave, and Syneron Candela. ESPN estimates that when the companies parted ways with the disgraced Olympian, Lochte lost roughly $1 million in the ordeal.
No mugging in history has been that costly!
Lochte – and America – will regret that night of drinking and stupidity for a long time to come.
