It was Mrs. Philips’ birthday, and her 4th grade class brought in presents to celebrate their teacher’s special day.
One of the students, whose parents owned a florist shop in town, gave Mrs. Philips a box. She held it out and said, “I think this is flowers.” The little 9-year-old girl’s mind was blown. “How’d you guess?” she asked. Mrs. Philips just chuckled and thanked her.
A second student, whose parents owned the local grocery store, also gave Mrs. Philips a present. The teacher looked at the box and guessed, “Is it candy?” Astonishment took this student as well. “How did you know that?” asked the incredulous young boy. Mrs. Philips laughed again, and kept her secret knowledge to herself.
The third student, whose parents owned a bottling plant, gave her a box which was leaking. Mrs. Philips touched the liquid with her finger and tasted it. “Mmmmm. Is it wine?” she asked the little girl who handed it to her.
“No,” said replied.
Mrs. Philips tasted it again. “Champagne?” she asked.
“Noooooooo,” squealed the excited girl. “It’s a puppy!”
