In October of 2012, Alex Nuwagaba and Mark Muzamiru, two law enforcement officials in Uganda, died in a tragic and unnecessary car crash. They weren’t drunk, nor were they speeding; they just didn’t navigate a bend in the road correctly.
But thanks to a recent crime spree, they didn’t even know there was a bend in the road….
Uganda, a poverty-stricken nation in Africa, is dealing with a unique problem: gangs keep stealing road signs along major highways. In fact, along the Kampala-Hoima Road, a major highway, over 100 signs were stolen in just one night! That amount of theft affects miles and miles of roadways. The vandals steal the valuable metal signs to sell for scrap, bringing in a sizeable revenue stream for themselves.
Unfortunately, it’s bringing traffic to a screeching halt because of all the accidents.
The Uganda National Roads Authority claims that if the trend continues, even more motorists and pedestrians will be put at risk. The consequences of the theft are twofold; it costs unsuspecting drivers their lives and it costs the government more money (they don’t have) to replace the missing signs.
Because of the theft, drivers in Uganda don’t know what’s coming down the road at them…literally. They are “driving blind,” resulting in one accident after another.
Fortunately, Christians don’t have to live like Ugandans drive. They have God’s Word to give them direction in life. In Psalm 119:102-105, the psalmist has this to say about God’s Word:
I do not turn aside from your rules, for you have taught me. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Because of God’s Word, believers walk, and live, in the light.
