Max was diagnosed with severe autism when he was just two years old. His life will never be a “normal” one as most of us define it, and not just because of his mental disorder. He’ll also struggle with the occasional idiot who masquerades as a “normal” adult.
Like this moronic woman in Ontario.
In August of 2013, Brenda Millson, Max’s grandmother, received an anonymous letter from someone in her neighborhood. The note didn’t contain any cash to help out with the family’s medical bills. Nor did it offer any encouragement or prayerful support to the elderly woman who cares for her grandson during the summer months. Instead, the letter directed one hateful line after another toward young Max and spewed so much contempt that it caused shock, disbelief, and tears amongst his family.
The note, pictured at right and written by a cowardly woman in the neighborhood, was simply signed “one pissed off mother.” She described Max as a “nuisance” and a “problem” and vented her frustration in incredibly hurtful ways. She wrote:
No employer will hire him, no normal girl is going to marry/love him and you are not going to live forever!! Personally, they should take whatever non retarded body parts he possesses and donate them to science. What the hell else good is he to anyone!!! I HATE people like you!!!
The mean-spirited woman – who seems to have an addiction to exclamation points – concluded her venomous note by callously suggesting that Max’s family, “Do the right thing and move or euthanize him!!!”
In short, “Your kid should be killed!!!!!!!”
Karla Begley, Max’s mom, can’t read the letter without breaking down in tears. “Who says that about a child?”
Answer: A woman who is even more handicapped than Max. That’s who.
If that hate-filled woman knew how many times Max’s family worried about his future, would she have been so vile? If she would have paused long enough to consider Max’s fears and needs, would she still have chosen to further segregate a young boy who’s already too isolated as it is? If she would have spent one single hour volunteering on Max’s behalf, would she still want his life to end?
I’ve never met Max. I don’t know how loud he can be. I don’t know how wild he can be. All I know is, he – like that anonymous woman, and you, and me – was created in the image of Almighty God.
Unlike that nameless woman, Jesus wants Max to live…and live abundantly!
